About Us
Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) Ireland raises awareness of sudden cardiac death, facilitates access to screening for families affected by sudden cardiac death and cardiac risk, provides a family support programme, and supports research into the causes and prevention of sudden cardiac death.
All services provided by CRY Ireland are free, and we are a self-supporting registered charity with the bulk of our funds coming from fundraising events organised by our incredible volunteers.
We were founded in 2002 by Michael and Marie Greene, following the death of their son Peter, to support families and work to establish a screening centre. Following fundraising efforts and advocacy with government, the CRY Centre was established at Tallaght Hospital in 2008 and has screened thousands of people for genetic cardiac conditions. More recently, we have expanded our family support work to guide those affected by loss and diagnosis in their journey.
Our Objectives
Free Clinical Assessment: Providing free Clinical Assessment and Management to all families of young people who are living with an Inherited Cardiac Condition or have suffered, or are at risk of, a sudden cardiac death.
Support: Providing a Family Support Programme, offering free access to Listening Volunteers, Mentors and bereavement specialists.
Event Organisation: Organising events and providing access to information and networks.
Research: Supporting research into the causes and prevention of sudden cardiac death, in collaboration with other like-minded bodies.

OUR FOUNDERS
Michael and Marie Greene founded CRY Ireland after the tragic death of their son Peter, who died in 1996. For Michael and Marie, with Peter’s untimely death came the realisation that there was no awareness of the incidence of sudden death in the young in Ireland nor was there adequate bereavement counselling service, or clinical screening support for the conditions that cause sudden cardiac death.
Along with like-minded families and clinicians, they worked tirelessly to provide support to families while raising funds to establish a screening centre, which would eventually be opened in Tallaght Hospital where the charity is now based. Michael spent 18 years as chair of the organisation before stepping down in 2018, while Marie focused on providing emotional support to families across the country helped by a small team of volunteers.
In 2022, Michael passed away following a short illness, survived by his wife Marie and three surviving children Julie, David and Kenneth. In his obituary in the Irish Times, Michael was commemorated with the words “Rarely does one person leave a legacy that has not only impacted already on the lives of hundreds of families and individuals across Ireland, but will continue to impact on many more in the generations to come. But this is exactly the case for Michael Greene.”
